Where Did Hotel Stars Come From?

This type of assessment was first used by producers of alcoholic beverages such as brandy and cognac – over two centuries ago in France. However, today stars are primarily associated with the hotel industry. Not all countries use such a system. One of those is Greece, where instead of stars, hotels are marked with letters. The letter 'L' is reserved for luxury establishments, while letters from 'A' to 'C' correspond to 4-, 3-, and 2-star hotels, respectively.
Hotel Stars in Poland
In Poland, the hotel categorization system in the form of stars was introduced under the Act of August 29, 1997, on hotel services and the services of tour guides and tourist guides. Assigning a specific number of stars to accommodation facilities is the task of the voivode marshal, in which the hotel is located. The marshal appoints a committee consisting of representatives from the hotel industry, construction supervision, sanitary inspection, and fire services. In Poland, the hotel rating scale ranges from 1 to 5 stars, where 5 stars represent the highest standard. Evaluating hotels is a rigorous and complex process that includes a range of different criteria.
Criteria for Assigning Hotel Stars
Wondering what kind of facility can apply for hotel stars? The basic requirement is having at least 10 rooms, with a predominance of single and double rooms. The committee that assigns hotel stars to establishments in Poland relies on a list of requirements that includes as many as 52 points. Many of these are usually unnoticed by guests. For example, a 3-star hotel is required to have a canopy over the entrance and a needle case in the room. The committee takes into account during the decision-making process:
the appearance of the residential area and the environment of the facility,
installations and technical devices,
bedroom and bathroom equipment,
catering and reception services as well as other amenities.

Hotel stars are commonly regarded as a measure of quality and comfort offered by a given hotel. The more stars, the higher the standard of the hotel, and thus the services and equipment.
1 Star
One-star hotels are usually the cheapest and most modest accommodations offering well-kept rooms. The offer may be limited, and the standards somewhat lower than in hotels with a higher number of stars. The room typically has a bed, wardrobe, and sink, while the bathroom is usually located in the hallway. There should be a common area for watching TV and storing luggage. This is a good option for budget travelers looking for just a place to sleep.
2 Stars
Two-star hotels offer a slightly higher standard than those with one star. Each room has a radio or television and internet access (or internet in a designated area) as well as a private bathroom with basic furnishings and toiletries. Guests also have access to a hotel restaurant.
3 Stars
Three-star hotels are more than just places to sleep. In addition to the basic equipment, they have a radio/television, telephone, nightstand, desk or table, chairs, and luggage space. There are also writing materials, glasses, bottled water, and in the bathrooms, in addition to toiletries, there are towels. The facility offers room service, a restaurant, a café, and access to wellness or spa facilities. The reception is bilingual and open 24/7.
4 Stars
Four-star hotels offer a luxurious experience. Rooms are spacious and well-equipped, and the staff pays attention to every detail. Guests have access to interesting beauty and cosmetic treatments. Professional massages and scrubs are the norm here. Additionally, the hotel restaurant has a rich menu and qualified staff. Moreover, hotels with this number of stars are often located in the city center or near historical sites.
5 Stars
The equipment of the room and bathroom in a 5* hotel differs little from that in a 4* hotel. However, the five-star hotel has an expanded catalog of services and an offer enriched with additional attractions. Guests can expect high-quality restaurants, pools, spas, and other amenities. These are ideal places for those expecting comfort and luxury. They are often located in exceptionally attractive places.
There are also luxury hotels with more than 5 stars. They are reserved for guests who value the highest standards and have a significant amount of money.
